THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN AUTO LEVEL AND A DUMPY LEVEL

Auto levels and dumpy levels can both be valuable pieces of survey equipment, but there are some differences between the two. A dumpy level is a simple tool with a straightforward design. Because it has fewer moving parts, it’s easy to use and requires less adjusting. And because it has a great deal of optical power, it can take very accurate readings. It does, however, require more user precision and manipulation to take accurate readings. It also can’t be adjusted to measure all angles. And because there’s no compensator mechanism, it won’t do automatic error correction. An auto level is more accurate, because it not only has a high-tech design but also has an internal compensator that will correct human error. The problem with an automatic level is that it requires more training to operate, and more adjustments will need to be performed.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN AUTO LEVEL AND A THEODOLITE

An auto level is an optical instrument that can be used to establish or verify points on the same horizontal plane, and it has an internal mechanism that eliminates variation and inaccuracy from measurements. A theodolite is an instrument that is used for measuring both horizontal and vertical angles, and it has a mounted telescope that can be moved horizontally or vertically. When the telescope is pointed at the object you want to measure, you can determine both the horizontal and vertical axes with great precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an automatic level?

Also called an auto level, an automatic level is a professional leveling tool that is often used by land surveyors, builders, contractors, and engineers. And it’s best known for its ability to provide consistent level accuracy more quickly than many other leveling instruments. It’s usually placed on a tripod, where it’s calibrated to a level position with leveling screws. The person operating the device then looks through the telescope that’s attached to the instrument, while a second person holds a graduated staff or tape measure at the position that needs to be measured.

What can an automatic level be used for?

An auto level can be used in many different applications, which can include but may not be limited to:
  • Structural framework.
  • Establishing proper drainage systems.
  • Determining the correct elevation of floors.
  • Establishing the proper height for doors and windows.
  • Developing suspended ceilings.
Whether you want to find a site level or any other type of leveling tool, be sure to look at what we have at Engineer Supply.

What types of levels are used in surveying?

There are many types of levels that can be used for surveying and construction. Some of them include but may not be limited to:
  • Dumpy Level— This is the most commonly used instrument for leveling. It has a telescope that can’t move along its horizontal plane, with a bubble tube that situated at the top.
  • Y Level— It has a series of Y-shaped frames that support the telescope, which can be removed by releasing the clamp screws. These Y-shaped frames are arranged to spin vertically, which allows you to rotate the telescope.
  • Cushing’s Level— The telescope can’t rotate along its vertical access and can’t be removed, but both the object and eyepiece ends are interchangeable (which makes this device reversible).
  • Tilting Level— It consists of a telescope that can be rotated horizontally and about four degrees vertically. Centering the bubble is easy with this type of level, but this process has to be performed every time it’s set up.
  • Cooke’s Reversible Level— It combines the function of both a dumpy level and a Y-level. The telescope can be reversed without rotating the instrument, while collimation errors can be eliminated because of a “bubble left” and “bubble right” reading for the telescope.
  • Automatic Level— It’s like a dumpy level, except the telescope is fixed to its supports. But a circular spirit level can be attached to the side of the telescope so the appropriate level measurement can be taken.
No matter what type of site level you’re looking for, you can find what you need at Engineer Supply.

How do I calibrate an automatic level?

Here are the steps on how to calibrate an auto level:
  • Place the instrument on a tripod, while pointing it at the collimator.
  • Turn the leveling screws to make sure they can move freely.
  • Look at the bubble vial to make sure the bubble isn’t larger than the circle.
  • Move the bubble to the center of the circle by using two of the three leveling screws.
  • Make sure the bubble stays center at 90, 180, 270, and 360 degrees.
  • Rotate the eyepiece focusing knob to both extremes, while focusing on the instrument’s cross hair (or reticle).
  • Rotate the focus knob so it’s first on close up and then on infinity to make sure the movement is smooth and even.
  • With the focus set to infinity, check the cross hair of the instrument to make sure it matches with the reticle on the collimator.
  • Use the adjusting screw next to the eyepiece to move the cross hair up and down until it matches with the collimator.
