A monkey wrench can be used to clamp onto pipes and a variety of fasteners (such as lug nuts, bolts, and screws). The jaws attach to the fastener head, which you do by sliding the lower jaw in a way that will allow you to create a strong grip. Once both jaws are clamped onto the flat sides of the fastener, you can start applying pressure to either tighten or loosen the fastener.

A monkey wrench can be referred to as any of the following:

• Non-adjustable spanner.

• Pipe wrench.

A monkey wrench is meant to loosen and tighten bolts, nuts, and screws. It’s a great tool to have in your tool kit, but it has mostly been replaced by the more modern adjustable wrench. A pipe wrench has a very straightforward purpose, which is to twist pipes. That’s why it’s an important part of a plumber’s toolbox.

In North America, the word “wrench” refers to a tool that’s used to provide grip and some mechanical advantage in applying torque to a specific object, which can be used to tighten or loosen it. In the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, they refer to this tool as a “spanner.” But in North America, this term refers to a special type of wrench with a series of pins or tabs that fit into holes or notches that have been cut into the object needing to be turned. They will often refer to this tool as a “spanner wrench” to distinguish it from the British use of the term.

Using a strap wrench isn’t difficult. Use the arrow indicators to determine which way to face the tool. This will depend on the direction the object needs to be turned. Because strap wrenches are self-tightening, you only need to turn it until it’s tight enough.
