Frequently Asked Questions

What does a pipe laser do?

A pipe laser level is used to determine the proper grade for laying pipes, so it acts as a kind of electronic level. It shoots high-powered laser beam at a predetermined angle, which will establish the proper grade for a construction project.

What is 1% on a pipe laser?

The grade on a pipe laser level establishes the slope of the pipe and is typically displayed as a percentage. A rise of one foot over a run of 100 feet is equal to a 1% grade. So once you enter your desired grade into the unit, the laser will automatically adjust the beam to match the slope of the pipe and will even maintain an accurate reference if it has been disturbed.

How do I install a sewer line with a laser?

You can install a sewer line with a pipe laser by performing the following steps:
  • Set up the pipe laser level next to the upper part of the manhole, which will be at the highest elevation point.
  • Spread the legs of the tripod and drive the legs into the ground.
  • Put the laser level on the tripod and adjust the bubble level knobs until it indicates level.
  • Put the receiver on the grade rod.
  • Turn on both the laser and the receiver.
  • Place the bottom of the grade rod in the trough of the outflow hole, which is located at the bottom of the manhole.
  • Move the receiver up and down the grade rod until you hear beeping.
  • Record the indicated number on the grade rod.
  • Walk to the next manhole with the grade rod, but don’t move the laser level.
  • Shoot the grade of the intake hole trough. The recorded elevation should be larger than the first, even if it’s at a lower elevation.
  • Subtract the first number from the second and record the results.
  • Measure the distance from the outflow hole of the first manhole to the intake hole of the second.
  • Divide the sum of the elevation difference by the length of the run between the two manholes, which will be the required amount of fall per foot for every pipe you install between them.
  • Place the pipe laser into the outflow hole of the upper manhole.
  • Adjust the fall-per-foot calibration with the “plus” and “minus” buttons on the pipe laser level to match your calculation.
  • Place the laser target into the intake hole of the second manhole, and press the horizontal adjustment buttons (right and left) until the laser is centered onto the bullseye of the target.

Ever since they were first introduced, critics have been seeing laser leveling tools as nothing more than a passing fad. But if that were the case, they wouldn’t be so popular for as long as they have. Laser levels can be suitable for many applications, and they come in both digital and non-digital models. You can even find self-leveling models, which can make it easier to set up and use. However, if you don’t have a laser level that calibrates itself, setting it up can be a little more complicated.

Put the laser level on the surface that you want to level, and manually adjust its position with the bubble-level on the device. Turn on the laser to get a true line where you need it, and mark the surface as needed. You may need someone else if you’re working on a larger project. Reposition and re-level the device to double-check your markings before you start working. But if you’re using a self-leveling device, you just have to mark and double-check each measurement.
