Drafting Chair

A drafting chair is designed specifically for use with drafting tables and other elevated surfaces that are above normal office-desk height. You can find one in a number of different designs, colors, and height adjustments. It will often have a seat back and foot-support ring, but you can also find one with accessory arms. There are some other alternatives for elevated seating that work similar to a drafting chair. Some of them include but may not be limited to:

  • Drafting Stool — This will give you elevated seating support, which can work well for normal drafting. But it won’t have a seat back or arm rests for support in those areas. It also won’t have height adjustments. It can, however, be an economical option for seating in drafting and drawing classrooms.
  • Leaning/Perching Stool — This kind of stool isn’t your typical drafting chair. You lean into it so you can have the perfect balance between sitting and standing, which can keep your spine in a neutral position and your major muscles engaged for a more “active” workday.

Before you decide on any specific drafting chair, you should first know the height of your work surface. The standard drafting height is about 37 inches, while the standard office height is about 30 inches. Most drafting tables can be adjusted within these ranges, so make sure the chair can go as high or as low as you need it to go.
