Marking Paint

The amount of time it takes before ground marking paint wears off will depend on the surface on which it was applied and the surrounding weather. If it’s a concrete footpath, it will last longer than a gravel road. But if it runs along a nature strip or on the grass, it won’t be there after it has been cut. It’s also hard to mark something while it’s raining, because it won’t be there the next day.

You can find ground marking paint in a variety of colors, but there are some standard colors that are used to designate certain areas:

• Red— Marks electric power lines, cables, conduits, and lighting cables.
• Yellow— Marks lines used for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or some other gaseous material.
• Orange— Marks lines used for communications, alarm or signal lines, cables, and conduits.
• Blue— Marks lines used for drinkable water.
• Green— Used to mark sewers and drain lines.
• White— Used to mark proposed excavation limits or routes.
• Pink— Used for temporary survey markings, as well as for unknown or unidentified facilities.
• Purple— Marks areas used for reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines.
