Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of equipment is made by Topcon?

Since it was established in 1932, Topcon Positioning Systems has manufactured a variety of optical equipment and surveying products that cater to the needs of professionals who work in the fields of surveying, engineering, construction, and equipment operation. They have continuously worked to develop more advanced features and functions that have allowed their products to be more efficient, so professionals in the construction and surveying fields can be more productive on the job site.

How can I determine grade with a laser level?

You can measure grade with a laser level by taking the following steps:
  • Set the laser level on a tripod that’s placed on firm, dry ground.
  • Make sure the tripod is stable.
  • Turn on the laser level, and give it a moment to self level.
  • Determine the initial height of your grade. The pitch will slope down from there.
  • Place the bottom of the leveling rod at the desired height.
  • Adjust the laser detector up or down until you hear a beep.
  • Secure the detector.
  • Determine the amount of fall from the top of the grade to the bottom.
  • Move the laser detector up the rod based on the amount of fall you have calculated.
  • Walk to where the bottom of the grade will be.
  • Find the level with the laser detector by lifting the rod or digging into the ground (depending on the workspace).
  • Mark the spot by inserting a stick in the ground that displays the desired height.

Can I use a laser level in the rain?

Many laser levels can handle being left out in the rain if it has a rating of IPX5 or higher, but it needs to be dried off before they’re put back in their carry cases. Being wet in an air-tight environment causes the area to become very humid, which will get into the casing of the laser level. This will have an effect that’s similar to what would happen if the device were completely submerged in water. The humidity will condense into its internal components and circuit boards, which will lead to damage.

What can a total station be used for?

Surveyors and civil engineers can use a total station to evaluate the topography of a particular area, record any of its existing natural features, plan for building construction, as well as set boundaries for roads and other pieces of land. They’re also useful in any of the following applications:
  • Mining
  • Meteorology
  • Archaeological digs.
  • Forensic investigations.
  • Building information modeling (BIM).
If you’re looking for a Topcon total station that can help you on your next project, feel free to browse through the broad selection we have at Engineer Supply.

How accurate is a total station?

Total stations are very accurate pieces of survey equipment. They can measure angles to a fraction of an arc second, and they can measure distances to hundredths of a foot over thousands of feet.
