Keson makes the only marking chalk that’s proudly made in the USA, and it comes in a broad range of colors with five variations of intensity. Pro Chalk Standard is for basic chalkline needs. It can be easily removed by washing it away naturally. It can also be used for both exterior and interior projects. Pro Chalk high Visibility is used for high-color contrast needs on dark surfaces (such as blacktop and roofing tiles), and it can be washed away or worn off naturally a few days after application. Pro Chalk Semi-Permanent is great for water-resistant applications, and it will be visible for a longer period of time. Pro Chalk Permanent is both weatherproof and waterproof. So, it’s good for jobs in more extreme conditions. Pro Chalk Ultimate Dye is meant to be laid down once, so it’s usually covered or completely out of sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can marking paint be removed?

Ground marking paint can be removed with a power washer that’s set on low pressure. But if you don’t have one available, you can apply a chemical paint remover to the painted area (which can come in brush-on, spray-on, liquid, or aerosol form). Scrub the treated area with a wire brush until the paint has been removed from the concrete, and spray it with a hose to rinse it away.

How do I use marking paint?

Also called “upside down paint” or “utility marking paint,” ground marking paint can used to mark important areas. And it can be used in the following applications:
  • Land surveying
  • Utility locating
  • Marking athletic fields
  • Logging
  • Landscaping
  • Fencing
  • Building projects
Feel free to look at the broad selection we have at Engineering Supply.

How long does marking paint last?

The amount of time it takes before ground marking paint wears off will depend on the surface on which it was applied and the surrounding weather. If it’s a concrete footpath, it will last longer than a gravel road. But if it runs along a nature strip or on the grass, it won’t be there after it has been cut. It’s also hard to mark something while it’s raining, because it won’t be there the next day.

Can I buy a holder for a can of ground marking paint?

Whether it’s a spray paint wand or some other accessory, you can find it at Engineer Supply. We have a variety of products that can be used for surveying and utility location, so feel free to take a look at what we have in stock.

What are the different colors of marking paint?

You can find ground marking paint in a variety of colors, but there are some standard colors that are used to designate certain areas:
  • Red— Marks electric power lines, cables, conduits, and lighting cables.
  • Yellow— Marks lines used for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or some other gaseous material.
  • Orange— Marks lines used for communications, alarm or signal lines, cables, and conduits.
  • Blue— Marks lines used for drinkable water.
  • Green— Used to mark sewers and drain lines.
  • White— Used to mark proposed excavation limits or routes.
  • Pink— Used for temporary survey markings, as well as for unknown or unidentified facilities.
  • Purple— Marks areas used for reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines.
