Paper is essential to drafting, but there are some questions you should ask before you make a final decision. Will you be doing a rough sketch or a final drawing? Will it be scanned or framed, and do you need grids? Final drawings are done on archival-quality paper, because the image will endure and the paper will stay crisp for years. The paper should also contrast well with the colors of pen and pencil. You want to use paper that’s firm and not too flexible, because it will stay intact for a longer period of time. And if you’re using an erasable medium, you want the paper to stand up well so you can limit the number of streaks and smudges. There are several kinds of paper that are good for drafting, and all of them can be used with graphite or ink. However, every kind of paper will have qualities that are more suitable for a specific writing medium.

This paper trimmer has grid lines in both inches and metric units, so you can easily align the material for precision trimming. It will also cut in either direction, which will save time and improve efficiency. The self-sharpening blade will produce a clean, burr-free cut for many years of precision trimming, and it’s safely enclosed in a plastic housing (which can prevent injuries). The adjustable paper guide will allow you to easily align the material, which is great for repetitive cutting. And the automatic paper clamp will hold your work in place to prevent shifting. It also has a sturdy metal base that will never warp, crack, or chip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is vellum paper?

Translucent vellum paper is made out of cellulose fibers that come from plants and trees. But historically, it was made by stretching calf skins over a wooden frame so it can be prepared for writing. While animal-based vellum paper is still being manufactured, it’s a very time-consuming and expensive process. That’s why plant-based vellums are more economical.

What can vellum paper be used for?

Here are some ways that you can use translucent vellum paper:
  • Drawings and Illustrations — If you draw for a hobby, vellum paper might be a worthwhile medium to work with because it can give your pictures a more unique look.
  • Tracing Designs — Because vellum is translucent, it’s great for tracing existing designs or replicating a drawing. Just lay the paper over the design, and use an ink or pencil to redraw the image.
  • Painting — Vellum can make paint colors look shinier, and many people enjoy using it for that particular medium. Just apply a neutral base color to the paper before you start painting.
  • Printing — You can use printable vellum paper to make a variety of small crafts. You can print a nice quote and put it in a picture frame as a gift. You can also print out birthday greetings on vellum paper, which you can glue inside a card.
  • Making Envelopes — You can take a regular envelope apart and use it as a template to make one out of translucent vellum paper. But while you’re assembling it, you should use a glue that’s made specifically for this medium because it has different adhering properties than standard paper.
  • Printing Greeting Cards — You can use printable vellum paper to make wedding invitations or other greeting cards so you can have an airier design, and they can be modified even further with a drawing or personalized message.
  • Printing Photos — You can mat a photo onto a large sheet of plain, colored, or printing vellum paper. Then, you can lay the printed photo on colored cardstock.

Can a printer print on vellum paper?

Because the surface of printable vellum paper isn’t porous like regular paper, it won’t absorb the ink. So if you print on vellum paper, make sure you don’t touch the ink before it dries because it will smear. And unless you're there to remove it immediately, you shouldn’t print more than one sheet at a time. You can also use a hair dryer set on low to dry the ink more quickly.

Can I glue vellum paper?

Because it won’t absorb glue like other papers, vellum needs a special kind of adhesive. It will also need that extra touch if you want it done correctly. Regular craft glues are going to glob, which will show through the paper. So, you want to make sure you use an adhesive that’s made specifically for translucent vellum paper.

Can I iron vellum paper?

Ironing a piece of translucent vellum paper under a towel or cloth will make it flat, but the wrinkle and crease lines will still be visible. Set the iron on low heat and press it into the towel (while making adjustments as necessary).
