A bookcase is a furniture accessory, so it doesn’t need to be the biggest or the most noticeable piece in the room. It’s better to have several small bookcases instead of a single large one. Look carefully at where it needs to go, and make sure you measure the available space.

Because each book has an average of one foot in width, you can use 12 books as a point of reference for each foot of shelving. Count the number of shelves you have in each section. And if you don’t use the bottom shelves because their harder to reach, leave them out of the total (unless you plan to use those bookshelves in the future).

You can organize your books according to the author’s last name. Then, you can alphabetize each title written by that person. It’s a little time-consuming (and maybe a little obsessive-compulsive), but it’s good to know exactly where a book is when you need to find it.
