As long as the string is taut, you can use a chalk box to snap a straight line. But if you go beyond 16 feet, it’s more difficult to get the string tight enough to snap an accurate line. The trick to marking longer chalk lines is to double-snap the string, which you can do by performing the following steps:
- Stretch the string tight before tying it off.
- Move to the midpoint of the string, and hold it down with your thumb.
- Snap one side of the string to mark the first half of the line.
- Snap the other side of the string to complete the line.
