WHAT ARE GRADE RODS?

Also called a “level rod,” a grade rod is an important instrument for construction, land measurement, and farming. It can help you to determine the differences in elevation on almost any surface, and it’s often used with an optical or laser level. The measurements are marked very clearly in high contrast, which can be on one or both sides. It will also have telescoping sections, so you can measure taller heights both quickly and accurately.

SECO PRISM POLE MAINTENANCE

Seco prism poles are meant to be used clean and dry, so very little lubricant is required. But the point body will rust if it’s exposed to wet ground. You can avoid this problem by lubricating it with any kind of grease. The upper mechanism will keep your bolts and hardware tight, so be sure to keep it clean and dry. Never spray it with WD-40 or any other silicone-based lubricant. If the pole gets wet, you can air it out. There’s a drain point located at the front of the pole. Just take off the point and let it sit in a warm, well-lit area. These aluminum poles are conductive, so be careful not to get it into any high-line wires.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a range pole?

A ranging pole is used for marking the position of survey stations as well as for ranging straight lines. The first ones were made of bamboo or some other piece of well-seasoned wood (such as teak, pine, or deodar). While the base material can be wood or steel, modern range poles are often coated with PVC. And they can have a weight between 0.75 kg and 2.5kg.

What's the difference between a range rod and a ranging pole?

Also called a “ranging pole,” a range rod is an instrument used by surveyors to mark the position of stations as well as for ranging straight lines. The first range poles were made of thin and straight bamboo or some other piece of well-seasoned wood. They were also shod with iron at the bottom and were surmounted with a flag about 250 square millimeters. Modern ones are made of wood, metal, or fiberglass and are usually about 2-3 meters long. They’re also painted with alternating bands in lengths of 200 millimeters, 500 millimeters, or one foot. These colors are used to help the user see the rod’s measurements, even in bad weather.

How many rods are needed to range a line?

To directly range a line, you will need at least three ranging rods. The best way to hold a ranging pole is to keep it loosely between your thumb and index finger at about 10 cm above the soil. Once the observer lets you know that the range rod is in the right position, you can loosen the pole. The sharp point at the bottom will leave a mark on the soil, which will tell you exactly where the pole has to be placed. You should use a plumb bob or carpenter’s level to see if the ranging pole is vertical.

What is the range of ranging pole?

Most range poles are 2-3 meters long that are painted in alternating bands, but some can be longer (3-6 meters) and can be used to measure longer survey lines. Another type of range rod (called an “offset rod”) has no flag at the top and is used for measuring small offsets in a survey line.

Where can I buy a quality range rod?

If you’re looking for a quality range rod that you can use on your next project, you can find what you need at Engineer Supply. Good quality aluminum tube and engraving. I needed a blueprint tube that would hold up to unusually harsh conditions and I'm very pleased with the product. Shipping was quick as well. Thanks.
