Is a spirit level more accurate than a laser level?

Blog is spirit level more accurate than laser level

With all the laser measuring tools on the market, it can be hard to decide what to buy. And the time it takes to research the available models is more than what most people want or have time for. Laser measurement tools can be used for any number of projects that require an accurate level reference. This can include any of the following:
  • Installing ceiling tiles.
  • Installing chair railings in a dining room.
  • Installing power receptacles for a home under construction.
A laser level can be used for something as simple as hanging pictures across a living room wall, but it can also be used for larger jobs (such as installing a sewer pipe or putting together a grading plan for a new building).

The Accuracy of a Spirit Level

Blog is spirit level more accurate than laser levels

If you don’t have a tool that can show you the levelness of certain areas, you won’t be able to build a functional house that looks pleasing to the eye. And you certainly won’t be able to hang kitchen cabinets or trim a door. A spirit level is the most basic of these types of tools, and it consists of a bubble that’s inside a liquid-filled vial. More high-tech options (such as a laser level) can give you a visual representation of a plumb line on the surface. And while laser measuring tools are great for doing layout work, they’re not very helpful when you have to check the position of an object. For this type of task, you need a tool with some type of bubble vial that can be set or pressed against the object. It’s the only way you can be sure that your work is leveled properly.

Many spirit levels have two sets of lines on their vials. When the bubble is between the inside pair, the object is level. But if it touches one of the outer lines, it’s pitched at 2% grade (which is about 1/4 inch for every foot of run). This is the required slope for waste lines, sidewalks, and rain gutters to drain properly. Like any laser measurement tool, a spirit level needs to be calibrated properly. Just set it on a flat surface, and look at the bubble’s position. Then, flip it on each end. And if the tool is accurate, the bubble should be on the same place. Any level with a replaceable vial can be adjusted. Otherwise, it will have to be replaced.
